Impactful ways to reduce our Technology Carbon Footprint

Sustainability is crucial to our future and the way forward, with more and more people now opting to work with companies who are going green, and those ones are reducing their carbon footprint.

What is a Carbon Footprint?

A person’s carbon footprint is simply a measure of how much carbon dioxide someone produces whilst going about their everyday life. There are certain actions we choose which can have a direct impact and negative contribute to the environment.

How does our Carbon Footprint impact our environment?

There are many factors that can be affected in our world when we don’t practice sustainability, those factors include urban air pollution; which can lead to toxic rain, climate change; which adds to coastal and ocean acidification, and amplifies the melting of glaciers and polar ice.

How can Technology help reduce your Carbon Footprint?

Carbon reduction technology can include many different practices, and before you start to reduce your carbon footprint you need to find out the size of it.  Have a look at things you may be doing around the office, both online and in your business processes to see where you can make a change. Some of our top tips below can help you reduce your company’s carbon footprint for good.

  • Energy consumption the office – Have a look around the office or your home office (if you work from home) make sure all lights are turned off unless it’s necessary, automate your thermostat with smart technologies so if temperatures drop it will turn on, limit heaters and fans – layer up or open the window!
  • Energy saver – You’re no doubt familiar with energy efficient light bulbs. Replace your office light bulbs with those and you have a better electricity bill, while shrinking your carbon footprint.
  • Company Electric Vehicles – If your business has a fleet of cars or vans for your team, if affordable, look at replacing these with electric cars. Not only are they more efficient, but EVs also use fewer hazardous chemicals in their operation and reduce the emissions that contribute to climate change and pollution.
  • Use cloud computing– Cloud infrastructures are secure and reliable; they also promote environmental proactivity such as cutting down on paper waste and improving energy efficiency.
  • Go Solar– There is a growing move towards powering your business by solar.  Not only reducing energy costs, but also by saving earths vital resources and minimising pollutants.

Other ways you can “Go Green”

In your day-to-day life there are lots of things you can do to help the environment such as:

  • Consume local and seasonal products.
  • Reuse and recycle.
  • Select fish from sustainable fishing practices.
  • Bring reusable shopping bags.
  • Avoid products with excessive plastic packaging.
  • Make sure to buy only what you need, to avoid excess waste.

Adopting any of these practices will not only make your feel good but it will help the world we live in for generations to come. It is good to remember every small change will make an impact!
