How Do You Create A Secure Password?

share:

Creating numerous strong passwords for different applications can be a daunting task especially when the applications contain personal data such as banking information or personal information.

Below we take a look at the different ways you can create a unique and secure password that you won’t forget!

Don’t use the same Password:

Using the same password for different websites and applications is highly risky and leaves you open to attack. Creating different passwords will ensure you are taking precautions to prevent hackers.

Do use Symbols and Numbers:

Another way to create a unique, hard-to-guess password is to use symbols and numbers. Considering that most computer keyboards contain 101 to 105 keys, you have millions of options when it comes to crafting a unique password.

Don’t use Personal Information:

This is one of the most important things to remember; do not use any personal information relating to yourself or your family. Using things like date of birth or partners’ names is a big red flag, these details can be easily tracked down by hackers on social media channels.

So don’t use:

  • A pet’s name
  • Partners name
  • Your middle name
  • Your children’s name
  • Hometown
  • Place of Birth
  • Maiden name
  • Favourite sport

How to Keep a Strong Password Secure:

Now you have found your perfect unique passwords, you also need to take some steps to ensure they stay secure and protected.

  1. Don’t re-use your passwords – If you’re using the same password across websites holding sensitive personal data and one of those experiences a breach, you’ve now exposed the other services to the risk of being breached too.
  2. Don’t write them down – You don’t know who might get access to these in the workplace or at home.
  3. Make sure you use a password manager – Many apps store your passwords securely in a password manager.
  4. Do not share your passwords – This one is a no-brainer; DO NOT share your passwords with anyone, ever.
  5. Use 2-Factor Authentication – Also known as 2FA, Two-Factor Authentication is when you sign in somewhere using your password, but then it will make you approve it using another device or application such as via SMS.

Summary:

You are now ready to create strong, long, memorable mixed-character passwords using one or more of these tips above. Remember, use unique passwords for every website, don’t re-use passwords, don’t use personal information as a password, use a password manager and finally, use Two-Factor Authentication.
