What is a VPN?

VPN (Virtual Private Network), this offers a higher degree of protection and privacy as you’re browsing the internet, whether at home, work or outside. and how does it achieve this? Simply put, a VPN creates a secure connection over public networks (such as public Wi-Fi) as well as home & work networks. VPN technology is a straightforward idea that you can securely connect someone you trust to a resource they need via a network you do not trust.

Different types of VPN

There are two types of VPN would, the trick is knowing which one to use.

Client

A client VPN would be some software that you install on your device. Many providers today offer subscription based VPN services which allows you to install the VPN software on all of your devices to ensure you are protected and have a consistent experience. These are easy to use and there are lots of choices our there today.

Some great examples of these include:

Network

A Network VPN is virtual private networks that securely connect two networks together across an untrusted network. One common example is an IPsec-based WAN, where all the offices of a business connect to each other across the Internet using IPsec tunnels. For these to work you need to have infrastructure to support them to be able to route securely between two endpoints.

Do I need one?

If you use your smart phone or portable device such as a laptop on the go and connect to any untrusted networks, which is any network that is outside of your perimeter and control, then the answer is yes. Protecting information that is either business or personal is critical in todays digital world. Many businesses now must comply with regulatory bodies who are making this mandatory.
